When the Spaniards started to explore the Amazon in the early 1500s, they created such difficulties that the early Americans came up with this story to keep them away. They told the explorers that in the middle of the jungle there existed a mysterious city built completely of gold. As you can imagine, the Spaniards spent years trying to find the city. Every time they asked for directions, the Native Americans said "Nah, it's not here. Keep on going. It's straight ahead."
